It was another Saturday at Indoestri Makerspace with our lobby filled with people, classrooms and studio well-prepared for that day’s activities and a wonderful smell coming from our cafe, Dawn and Willow, enough to get us guessing what’s for lunch.
At 10 o’clock participants were ready, flipping through the syllabus pages and preparing themselves for what that day would offer. Mrs. Sancaya Rini’s class was held at Indoestri Makerspace’s lounge with a total of 23 class members. She started the class by sharing about her passion on natural dyeing by using natural resources such as flowers, wood, leaves, fruit, etc.
After the briefing from the instructor, the participants moved to our workshop where we have prepared three working stations producing different colors from sources like mangrove, rambutan and ketapang. They soaked the fabric in a color fixative before the dye process which helps in making the color set in the fabric, rinsed it with clean water then dried the fabric.
By the end of the class, class members were caught taking photos with their new naturally-dyed shawls and color catalogs on their hands which can act as a guideline when doing another natural dyeing experiment, advised by Mrs. Sancaya Rini.
What makes Mrs. Sancaya Rini one of a kind is how she support the slow fashion movement and has successfully portrayed her spirit with two fashion brands Kanawida and Kana Goods. These two brands were born from her passion which the products are made using only natural sources around us. She want the young generations to cherish the story behind clothes they wear, which in this case still being ignored by most of us. It was another day well spent at Indoestri Makerspace!
